What is EMV?
EMV is an newly added layer of protection that is now being added to the majority of debit and credit cards. The technology was created by Europay, Mastercard and Visa (EMV) in a effort to increase fraud protecting for the consumer and decrease in lost revenue from those frauds. The effect of this technology decreased credit and debit card fraud in Canada by 73% in just 3 years.
At this time there are an estimated 1.5 billion EMV enabled cards and devices in 130 countries. The United States payment process industry will make this a standard practice. By the end of 2016, 60% of merchants are expected to switch to EMV compatible terminals, the remaining 40% by the end of 2016.
